課程簡介 本課聚焦於新聞類文章,旨在幫助學生增加詞彙量、練習重要句型,以培養有效的閱讀策略。由於選材是具有即時性的新聞議題,學生可以從英文看世界,拓展視角。
課程目標 對應系所核心能力
1. 強化學生英語文閱讀、聆聽的策略與能力,協助獲取專業領域新知 學士:
 1-1 熟知並能利用閱讀及寫作策略,且能深入探討文章內涵
 1-2 熟知基本聽力及口語表達技巧及策略
 2-2 具備對各類型文章的鑑賞、分析及擷取重要資訊的能力
 2-4 具備以英語清楚瞭解報導或演講內容,並做筆記、摘述大意要點的能力,且能發表個人意見
 2-5 具備以英語發表簡報的能力
2. 提昇英語文口語、寫作的表達能力,期盼學生能於工作職場及學術研究領域展現英語專業涵養。 學士:

CourseObjectives.

 

Thiscourseaimstoenhancestudents’Englishproficiencythroughguidedreadingofvarioustypesofnewsarticles.Studentswillhaveachancetofamiliarizethemselveswiththestyleofjournalisticwriting,buildtheirvocabulary,sharpentheirreadingcomprehension,andkeepcurrentwithworldnews.AstheclassisconductedentirelyinEnglish,studentswillalsogetachancetoimprovetheirspokenEnglish.

Besuretofinishalltheassignedreadingpriortoclassmeeting.

Studyvocabularyactively.ThisisessentialtotheadvancementoyourEnglishproficiency.Makeuseoftheglossary(definitionofvocabulary)atthebackofthetextbook.

Afterreadinganewsstory,youshouldlearntosummarizeitinyourownwords(thisisaskillcalled“paraphrase”).

Classactivitiesmayincludethefollowing:

--goingoverdifficultwordsandsentences
--drillingsentencepatterns
--discussingthenewsstory

Requirements.

Conscientiouspreparation,regularattendance,andactiveclassparticipation.

Choicebetweenanoralpresentationandareadingresponse.Thosewhochoosetogiveapresentationshouldsignupatthebeginningofthesemester(seeclasssschedulebelowforweeklytopics).Makeaten-minutepresentationonthe“spotlightnewsmediaoftheweek.”Avoidmeanderingonthewebsiteofthenewsagencythroughthose“menus.”Alternatively,youmaychoosetowritea400-wordreadingresponsetoanyassignednewsarticlewereadthisterm.Turnitinanydaybeforethefinalexam.
