課程簡介 In this class we will read a variety of primary and secondary sources in both English and Chinese. Students will be asked to take turns summarizing the readings for each week and to submit term papers (15-20 pages in length) at the end of the course.

教學進度與主題
本課程將探討修辭學在西方與中國的異同。我們將盡可能閱讀主要文本(primary texts),選讀內容包括Plato Gorgias and Phaedrus  Aristotle Poetics and Rhetoric Quintilian Institutio Oratoria 匿名的Rhetorica ad Herennium; 說難 (韓非子);詩序;典論論文(曹丕);文心雕龍 (劉勰);文則(陳騤);與元九書(白居易)等
1.初步了解西方修辭學的歷史。
2.初步了解中國修辭學的歷史。


We will learn some of the main theories of rhetoric in the western and Chinese traditions. We will also consider how a knowledge of rhetoric can be applied to Translation Studies. Finally, we will consdier how rhetoric can be applied to our own writing.

The main textbook to be used will be Corbett's Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student (4th edition). We will also read excerpts from the Literary Heart and the Carving of Dragons.


教學方法

講述法 Instructor will give weekly lectures about an hour in length.
討論法 Students will be asked to discuss the lecture and reading materials.
評量方法
方式 百分比 說明
課堂討論參與 40 % Students will be asked to discuss the assigned texts in class. In addition, they will be asked to discuss progress on their term papers.
報告 60 % A term paper of about 15 to 20 pages in length is due at the end of the semester.
