| 課程簡介 | In this class we will read a variety of primary and secondary sources in both English and Chinese. Students will be asked to take turns summarizing the readings for each week and to submit term papers (15-20 pages in length) at the end of the course. | ||

本課程將探討修辭學在西方與中國的異同。我們將盡可能閱讀主要文本(primary texts)，選讀內容包括Plato 的 Gorgias and Phaedrus； Aristotle 的 Poetics and Rhetoric； Quintilian 的 Institutio Oratoria； 匿名的Rhetorica ad Herennium; 說難 （韓非子）；詩序；典論論文（曹丕）；文心雕龍 （劉勰）；文則（陳騤）；與元九書（白居易）等 1.初步了解西方修辭學的歷史。 2.初步了解中國修辭學的歷史。 We will learn some of the main theories of rhetoric in the western and Chinese traditions. We will also consider how a knowledge of rhetoric can be applied to Translation Studies. Finally, we will consdier how rhetoric can be applied to our own writing. The main textbook to be used will be Corbett's Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student (4th edition). We will also read excerpts from the Literary Heart and the Carving of Dragons. |
