課程簡介 This course offers an introduction to the development of literature in Western civilization through a closer study of some major works of Ancient Greece, the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It focuses on the major themes and developments that have had significant impact on the Western literary tradition. It also aims to familiarize students with the significant religious, historical and social events that have shaped Western society and literature.

教學進度與主題

Course Description and Objectives:

This seminar aims to familiarize students with recurrent themes and motifs in western literature through close reading of selected classics from the ancient period to the dawn of Continental Renaissance. A comparative approach will be applied to look into the cultural and historical contexts of the literary works so as to better orientate students to the study of British Literature and American Literature.

 

Requirements:

  1. Grading policy: 
  • Attendance & participation 10%
  • Class presentation 20%
  • Exams 60%
  • “De ja vu” project 10%: to report on your finding of the appropriation of early western literature in contemporary life.
  1. Punctuality in coming to the class and turning in your homework is strongly desired. Exceptions are allowed only under emergent circumstances or notification in advance.
  2. Students will hand in their homework only in electronic text. No late homework would be accepted.
  3. Any student who plagiarizes or edits writing of others without acknowledgement would fail the course.

其他 100 % Students are expected to be familiar with the required readings prior to class discussions. Students will be graded on the basis of (1) their active participation in the class/moodle discussions & group project—40%, (2) midterm & final—60%. Failure to take the midterm and final test, attend classes/quizzes and submit the project on time will result in the student inability to pass the exam.
