課程簡介	This course is an EMI course and will be conducted in English only. It adopts a non-traditional approach by putting together hands-on projects with textbook studies. The purpose is fivefold. 1. Introduction to Western Art: This course will provide students with a basic understanding of the history of western art from the Renaissance onto the 1920s with a focus on 12 masters—Van Eyck, Caravaggio, Velasquez, Vermeer, Chardin, Hokusai, Degas, Sisley, Monet, Eakins, Klee, and Mondrian. 2. Basics in arts appreciation: This course will introduce students to the 10 key elements in the appreciation of western art—basics, proportion, perspective, light, color, composition, movement, mood, symbols, and abstraction. 3. English communication: As the course is conducted in English, it’d create ample opportunities for students to communicate in English by discussing textbook readings, making oral presentations, and making art exhibitions in English. 4. Experiences of aesthetic pleasure: The course will enable students to experience aesthetic pleasure by means of exposure to artistic masterpieces, fieldtrip to arts museum, and hands-on arts projects. 5. Exposure to international cultures: As the course is part of the ICP, it’s planned to increase students’ exposure and awareness to international cultural differences. Despite the focus on western art, it’ll integrate and highlight students’ personal backgrounds and foster a multicultural environment that’d transgress the national boundaries. The textbook of this course is Content Area Reading in Art by Lynn Sauve (《名畫學英文》). (Taipei: Bookman, 2005)
