課程簡介	At all times, humans used a great array of media and tools for their creative expression. Already in prehistory, parietal art consisted of a variety of painterly and modeling techniques, which could also be combined. This seminar will give an overview of the materials and techniques used in Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present. To cover this wide time range, selected case studies will help to concentrate on basic media and technical methods, which characterized the arts of the diverse epochs. As of the Graeco-Roman antiquity, theoretical works on the arts and their materials and techniques can be juxtaposed to existing artworks. We shall, therefore, apply a double-track approach, examining both the artworks themselves and the concurrent writings on their material and technical aspects. The course will be, first, composed of lectures, in which basic knowledge will be taught and special topics will be discussed. Students will have the possibility to actively take part in the lessons by preparing short presentations. Second, in practical work units, we shall learn together some artistic techniques in order to better understand the work processes of the great masters. Third, in collaboration with Taiwanese and international specialists from the fields of art, art restoration and art management, students will get an insight into the daily work of artists, restorers and conservators, who will talk about their experiences with the diverse media. A documentary film on a spectacular case of art forgery will, finally, offer an insight into an old theme that has become a constant menace of today’s art scene.
