課程簡介	Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 until her death in 1901 is the longest in Britain. This period of prosperity and peace is not totally deprived of tensions and contradictions if we take into account the side of artistic production. The course aims to analyze the development of British art, by focusing on the specificities of the visual culture in Victorian Britain. The different major artists and movements - from Joseph Mallord William Turner until Walter Sickert - will be scrutinized and confronted to the theoretical, socio-cultural, and institutional context. A special attention will be paid on the relationships between artists and audience, while the economic criteria conditioning the artistic creation, such as the rise of private patronage, the development of the art dealer, or the emergence of the museums, galleries, and exhibition places will be also taken into consideration. The course will finally examine on one side the diverse influences, collaborations, debates and reactions occurring between artists in-and outside the field of the visual arts, and assess on the other side the artistic exchanges which took place between England and the European Continent during that period of time.
