課程簡介 The course focuses on the architecture in Italy during the period of High Renaissance. We shall consider the development from the beginning of the 16th century, with Donato Bramante moving from Milan to Rome after 1499, to the stylistic transition from Late Renaissance to Baroque architecture, revealed in Vignola’s plans for the Gesù in Rome after the middle of the century. Initially, we will ask for the reasons of the dislocation of the artistic centre from Florence to Rome at the beginning of the 16th century and study the historical and cultural background of the new development. The papal commissions, such as the different schemes of St Peter’s in Rome, will be one of the main subjects to be discussed. In case studies, principal works of the era’s great masters—Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Giulio Romano et al.—will be analyzed. After having moved the various centres of architectural activity throughout Central Italian, we will study Venice and the Veneto with the main protagonists Michele Sanmicheli, Andrea Palladio, and Jacopo Sansovino. Students will, thus, get an overview of the development with the intention to qualify them to independently read, classify and attribute buildings. Specific attention will be paid to the practice of analytical description of the works of art. Different methodological approaches will be discussed and practiced. Furthermore, critical reading of sources—such as the architectural treatises of Sebastiano Serlio and Andrea Palladio—will be trained; the relationship between architectural theory and practice will be explored.
