課程簡介 The educational objective of this course is to impart the scientific base of Baroque architecture in Europe. The course will provide an introduction, focusing initially the style’s foundations in Italian Late Renaissance and Mannerism, and analyzing then works of the period’s main protagonists, Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola (1507–73) and Giacomo della Porta (c. 1532–1602) with their designs for the mother church of the Jesuit order, Il Gesù in Rome, as well as Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680) and Francesco Borromini (1599–1667). It will be analyzed how the dogmatic thoughts of the Counter-Reformation influenced the art of building and determined the structures’ form and content. Subsequently, we shall consider the spreading of Baroque style all over Europe, taking into account the various important cultural centers, and especially France, southern Germany and Austria. In the focus will be religious as well as secular works. Students are expected to be capable of analyzing independently the buildings using the correct terminology. In interpreting and discussing essential texts on the topic, they should acquire a problem-based competence to use established and appropriate methodological analysis and are expected to be capable of working autonomously on scientific papers on architectural topics.
