課程簡介 Venice stands out as one of the most distinctive metropolises globally, characterized by its harmonious cityscape built on water. Since the fifteenth century, literary representations, city guides, and travelogues have underscored the unique features and unmatched cultural richness of Venice. The Renaissance, more than any other era, played a pivotal role in shaping the exceptional cityscape and establishing the parameters of the cultural life of the city. In the introductory segment, our seminar will delve into the historical background, language, and cultural peculiarities of the island and its mainland possessions that distinguish this city from other urban centers in Italy. We will, then, explore various genres of religious and secular painting, examining the historical, religious, and political functions of these works. The preservation of many artworks within their original context in Venice provides a significant opportunity for a more profound understanding of their historical roots and the ritual context in which they were conceived. Through case studies, the evolution of Venetian painting will be traced from the late Middle Ages and Early Renaissance to the late sixteenth century. We will start with selected examples from the late-medieval period, and proceed to Giovanni Bellini (c. 1430–1516) and his contemporaries. In a further step, high Renaissance art from Giorgione (c. 1478–1510) and Titian (c. 1490–1576) to Paolo Veronese and Jacopo Tintoretto (1518–94) in the late sixteenth century will be explored. Furthermore, we will investigate the cultural exchange with Central Italy, the Northern countries, and the East, and analyze its dynamics in shaping the artistic progress of the city. Students will gain an overview of artistic developments and methodological approaches to Renaissance painting, enabling them to independently assess the works of art. Specific attention will be paid to the practice of visual analysis and historical research. Furthermore, different methodological approaches will be discussed and practiced. This seminar is an EMI course using English as a Medium of Instruction. This means that it will be fully taught in English. Special attention will be given to everyone’s needs to learn and improve the language.
