課程簡介 From the cabinet of curiosities of the Renaissance to the recent biennials, “curatorial” practices have considerably evolved throughout history in terms of aesthetics, strategies, and ideologies of display. The development of paratextual entities such as the exhibition catalogue or the label have been replaced today by new technologies of information, which substantially enlarge, expand, and complete the experience of the museum visit. Audio-visual documents, computer screens, 3D reconstitutions, animations, and internet links provide the visitor with further explanations. The exhibition space has also undergone total transformation. The cabinet of curiosities and its taxonomy experienced fundamental metamorphosis at the end of the 18th century in Vienna when in 1783 Christian von Mechel inaugurated the Imperial Museum, the Belvedere, with a display based on chronology and the separation of artistic schools. This model of scientific clarity was later adopted by the major art museums in the 19th century and faced challenges by new architectural concepts such as Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim in Bilbao and Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI in Rome, whereby the architect’s gesture have almost put the exhibits out of sight. Key to interpreting the latest tendencies of the exhibition space is to understand the historical development of the display of art. This course aims at delineating the major issues related to the various contexts, rules, strategies, and ideologies that are connected with the history of exhibitions and museums. By offering a critical view on the dispositions (display, information, architecture and design) that modified the vision, interpretation, and creation of art, this course engages both theoretical and practical approaches. Emphasis will be on writing such as a catalogue entry and a short review of an art exhibition or event. Visits to exhibitions and museums will also be part of the course agenda.
