課程簡介	Considered by its inventors as an “invention without a future,” cinema received the label of “seventh art” when Riciotto Canudo published his Reflections on the Seventh Art in 1923. Though the status of cinema as a form of art remains controversial, movies have nevertheless received more attention from the field of art history within the last decade than any other time before. Cinema has permeated studies in the visual arts to the extent that it has influenced the process of presenting, seeing, and interpreting artworks. In this context, a course on cinematic history is therefore necessary to understand cultural development in the twentieth century. The objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive survey on the history of cinema from the proto-history of the moving image until today. Each session will focus on paradigmatic works, retracing the most critical stages of the history of cinema. Special attention will also be given to issues addressing medium specificity and its relationship to art as well as how filmmakers and/or theoreticians define it as the “seventh art.”
