課程簡介 Storytelling has enjoyed a long tradition in the visual arts, but it is during the Renaissance that the first theories defining painting as the support of a narration, or a history appeared. Leon Battista Alberti’s treatise on painting De Pictura (1435) was the first text to devote important chapters to the scientific study of perspective and the principles of the storia. In the ensuing centuries, artistic literature continued to emphasize the pre eminence of the storia in the hierarchy of genres until it was severely questioned during the second half of the 19th century. With the development of abstraction and the advocacy of medium specificity in the first half of the 20th century, narration tended to disappear from the field of painting yet not completely away from the visual arts since storytelling became one of the essential aspects of cinema. Today, narration can be understood beyond the specificity of the visual medium. As narrative and non narrative aspects coexist in the same works and represent an integral part of the paradoxical issues that artists, photographs, and filmmakers wish to address, it is imperative to analyze what is at the stake for visual narration and reevaluate its role and development in art history.

4. This course will also examine the way artists unfold their narratives, the strategies they use to represent a story, and the choices they make in order to “translate” or “adapt” it in visual terms. 碩士:
