課程簡介 The aim of this course is to explore the development of sculptural art during the Early and High Renaissance in Italy (c. 1400–c. 1550). Initially, two main features of this era will be considered: 1) the birth of Renaissance thinking in late-fourteenth-century literature and the resurgence of learning based on classical sources, which provides a foundation for the visual arts; and, 2) the rediscovery of Nature through antiquity. We shall survey the effects of these developments on the artistic genre of sculpture. With Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Michelangelo Buonarroti, the foremost creative personalities of Renaissance art will be presented. In order to better understand the theoretical background of the visual arts in that era, but also to have a more direct approach to the artistic personalities, excerpts from major sources of artistic writing will be read and analyzed together, from Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Commentaries, to Benvenuto Cellini’s autobiography, and Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists (and others). Different methodological approaches will be also discussed and practiced: Style and iconography, historical background, art theory, technical issues (for example, it will be examined, how bronzes were cast) among other research methods will be considered.
