課程簡介 The development in exhibitions from an annual event to a public holiday (Rome, Venice, Paris) to the exclusive medium for the presentation of art, the emergence of the public and public criticism, and the orientation fo artists to exhibition work, was the most decisive and consequential change in the art world since the Renaissance. Artist had to define, legitimate and finance their work in public competition with each other. In contrast to the previous types of artists (the court artist, the studio artist) the new type, the exhibition artist, worked at his own risk, to be judged by an unknown recipient (the public), who could not always be accused of ignorance and a one-sided view. To be successful the exhibition artist had to become the subject of public discussion, had to find access to the media and project an interesting image to accompagny his works. This course analyses the change of the western art system since the middle of the 18th Century up to the 20th Century including the rise of the exhibition artist to the new leading type of artist and the development of the exhibition institutions (like for ex. the Venice Biennale).
