課程簡介	The “West” has global impact on the world since industrialization, capitalism, and colonialism in modernity. While music reformers and creative musicians in the “East” have embraced Western music in ways that appealed to their modern visions and aesthetics, how to treat the pre-existing musical establishments is a lasting and open issue. Comparing between the musics of native roots and musics originated in the modern West emerged as a method that served both epistemological and practical goals. It was from engaging comparative relations that the modern knowledge of local musical history and theory, as well as the production of modern music making emerged. Although the biases of comparative approach have been well flagged (causing name changing of the discipline from Comparative Musicology to Ethnomusicology), applications informed with postcolonial and postimperial self-awareness could allow critical reflections of knowledge formed in early modernity on the one hand, and creative relation-making with the musical heritages circulating between the two cultural blocks. This course extends the comparative applications as methods of reviewing different versions of local music history and practices. Liberated from the fixated idea of the “East”, the course compares between Chinese and Western music in history, form, and practice.
