課程簡介 | The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the `theory of narrative` and with the history and development of the modern (and postmodern) European novel, and thus with various narrative genres (both traditional and contemporary). The focus will be on a close reading of the following, and on a discussion of the plots, characters, symbols, ideas and narrative techniques: (1) traditional myths and folk tales; (2) excerpts from classical (Homer`s Iliad and Odyssey) and medieval (Beowulf, Marie de France`s `Laustic`) epic and narrative poetry; (3) brief excerpts from the early (proto-postmodern) novels of Rabelais (mid-1500`s) and Cervantes (1605); (4) longer excerpts from what some call the first “novel,` Defoe`s travel-adventure novel Robinson Crusoe (1719); (5) Excerpts from Swift`s travel novel Gulliver`s Travels (1726); (6) Coetzee`s late-20th-century novel Foe (1986), a playful `rewriting` of Robinson Crusoe and an example of `historiographic metafiction`; (7) themes of gender, race, power, colonialism and “voice” in Defoe, Swift and Coetzee, and of (proto-) postmodernism in Swift and Coetzee. | ||
