課程簡介 The goal of this course aims at a general survey of post-colonial theories and theories of urban studies. We will also read a few literary works and explore how the concept of the body is used as a metaphor or motif in the urban representations of some post-colonial cities. Students are expected to grasp the basic concepts of post-colonialism, urban studies, and the relevance of urban space to the body. We will read a select group of articles organized according to different topics, and, whenever appropriate, juxtaposing these articles with literary texts (e.g. works by Salman Rushdie, Hanif Kureishi, Kazuo Ishiguro, and J.M. Coetzee) or films for further critical reflections or debates. Requirements: 1. Preparation, regular attendance, and active participation in class discussion. 2. Weekly response paper. 3. One or two oral presentations which must include the brief recapitulation of the assigned readings, your own critique of the major arguments in these articles, and two discussion questions. 4. Final paper due on June 30, 2012. (10 pages for MA students, 15-20 for PhD students) All papers, including the response paper, the proposal, and final papers, must be typed, double-spaced 12 point Times New Roman.
