課程簡介	This is an ENC (Ph.D. and MA) course that aims to provide an in-depth introduction to the question of the other in western discourses. As early as The Book of Ruth, the figure of the other has penetrated in western discourses. In recently years, the other has been re-configured in the waves of illegal immigrants, alien residents, political refuges, etc. in the era of globalization. The discourses of the other have also gone beyond the human to include the encounters with animals, machines, and other non-human beings. The course would provide a thorough examination of discourses of the other by drawing on the works of Foucault, Kristeva, Derrida, Nancy, and Spivak. Another important concern of the course is the value of literature in the “deliverance of others” (Palumbo-Liu 2012). The course would then integrate critical theories and literary narratives in our investigation of the question of the other.
