課程簡介 UNIT OUTLINE The purpose of the course is to introduce graduate students to some of the most important recent poetry by British, Irish and American writers. The focus this semester is on poetry that was produced after World War Two, though at certain points in the course poetry from before the war (e.g. work by Marianne Moore and David Jones) is introduced in order to help make sense of subsequent developments. There will also be a significant emphasis on the cross-fertilizations and dealings between British/Irish and American poets and poetries. The ideas around which the course is structured include the following: Europe and America before but especially after WWII (affluence, decline, counter-culture, hegemony) Developments in idiom and form Traditions and counter-reactions (the survival of Romanticism, the Thomas Hardy strain in British poetry) Symbolism, cubism and the modern city; dream-work and the visionary Cosmopolitanism Satire and political critique New secular myths History in the present Philosophy of time The public and private functions of the poet (and what lies in between, including confession and collaboration) Sexualities Poetics and mental health
