| 課程簡介 | This course is planned to be a survey, however, with a focus on the Pacific. It would provide a survey of the field, as well as probe into the geopolitical discourse of the Pacific, the region that has garnered much critical attention in recent years. The course will be divided into three parts. Part I will introduce students to the field by covering the surveys, sites, and topics in relation to travel literature. Part II will focus on the cultural narratives of the Pacific by unpacking the historical, geographical, literary and postcolonial undercurrents of the region. Part III will be devoted the textual readings and analyses. It will place the selected texts in the context of the Pacific Rim and explores the geopolitics of the making of the Pacific. All travel texts are chosen with a view to enhancing our awareness of the knowledge production process of the sites and sights of the Pacific. How did the Pacific come into being and how was it “discovered,” “encountered,” and “circumscribed” in various voyages from the 15th to the 20 centuries—These are the questions we will explore in the course of this seminar. Students are also encouraged to take part in a compilation and edition of a resource book about the Pacific as a region and an area of study. | ||
