先修課程
課程簡介 This course is designed to offer PhD students an introduction to literature composed in and about the traumas of war. Although there is a bias on the course toward literature written originally in English, we will also be considering texts originally written in other languages; translation has a hugely important role in conveying the transnational experiences of war. The course is arranged in thematic units but in such a way that crucial developments in subject matter, technique, thought, and feeling can be appreciated from a chronological perspective. The course is not based on any single theoretical or methodological principle: biographical, historicist, materialist, philosophical, psychoanalytical, and (ultra-)close approaches will all undoubtedly contribute to our reading of the figures of trauma in war. Along with an intertextual emphasis on translational and transnational literary encounters—often across historical periods—the course also explores some of the ways in which war trauma is mediated through the discourses of national and international politics, gender, sexuality, and ethnicity. Above all, this course is intended to help students respond to the individual voices of war, wherever and however they emerge.
