課程簡介 Goals: This is a doctoral-level seminar on phonetics. The goals of this seminar are: 1) to introduce the fundamental aspects of acoustic phonetics and speech perception as a human cognitive mechanism; 2) to introduce various methods and techniques for phonetic experiments; 3) to discuss the current issues in the fields of phonetics and speech perception; 4) to comprehend and investigate the speech perception models; 5) to help students develop their own research proposal and experiment. The ultimate goal for you is to deepen your knowledge of phonetics and speech perception and to heighten your skills for conducting experiments to the level of professional research. You will be required to carefully design and conduct an experiment including developing research questions to test your hypotheses, analyzing the data by using a statistical tool, and interpreting and discussing the results by referring to the current theories. You will be required to write an abstract of your research and be strongly encouraged to submit it to important, prestigious conferences in the field to make a good contribution to the linguistic society as an independent researcher. Here are suggested conferences that you might want to consider: 1. 2009 Annual meeting of Linguistic Society of America (LSA): January 8-11, 2009, Portland, Oregon. This is the biggest international linguistic conference in North America. Usually the abstract deadline is the beginning of September. (http://www.lsadc.org/info/meet-futuremeet.cfm) 2. 156th meeting of Acoustical Society of America (ASA): November 10-14, 2008, Miami, Florida. This conference focuses on various areas of acoustic research involved in not only human speech production and perception, but also animal communication, sound and music, underwater acoustics, etc. (http://asa.aip.org/meetings.html) The abstract deadline is TBA. The good thing about this conference is that all members of ASA can present their research in poster presentation form and that we can meet with phoneticians and engineers from all over the world. General organization of the course: The course will be divided into four parts: basics of acoustic phonetics, basics of speech perception, experimental design and basics of statistics, and speech perception models. There is no required textbook for the course. Mostly we will read articles and book chapters, grasp the main ideas and important concepts, and discuss them in class. You will be responsible for finishing reading assignments before class and being ready for discussion in class. You are welcome to find articles that interest you and bring them in class to read and discuss as a group.
