先修課程
課程簡介 This course introduces students to the novel as a literary form, focusing on both stylistic elements (characterization, plot, theme and so on) as well as the historical, cultural and social contexts of the works. We will read a selection of the most important works of the 19th century from various national traditions, including British, French, Russian and American. Students will be expected to read both closely and broadly, and to analyze and evaluate works with careful attention to textual evidence and detail. Students will also be introduced to basic theories of the novel, and guided toward important critical texts on these works. This course is unique in the quantity of reading required; in my observation, students rarely have time in their literature survey courses to concentrate on longer works. However, as courses in the novel are standard fare in the English departments of US universities, I wanted to give NTNU students the chance to challenge themselves with such texts. This course would be open to any student (probably sophomore through senior year) who could commit to the challenge of reading a novel every two weeks.
