課程簡介 Theory building is an important and challenging topic for both conceptual and empiri-cal research in any field of science. The centrality of theories has been emphasized by scholars from the natural sciences to the social sciences. This course is designed to acquaint students with ideas and knowledge relevant to theory building in the social sciences. Throughout this course, we will read and discuss various topics, including the philosophy of research, what constitutes a (good) theory, and how to construct, adopt, and evaluate theories. This course will also cover how to write a theory paper. Note that theory construction "resembles a craft more than an art or a science" (Rivard, 2021). Thus, students should not expect to develop a “perfect” theory after taking this course. Overall, the ideas presented in this course are intended to help stu-dents advance their understanding of theory in the social science, and enhance their theorizing skills relevant to their research work.
