課程簡介 The purposes of this course are two-folded: to introduce the basic ideas and techniques behind problem solving in mathematics as well as how to do research in the area of problem solving from an educational point of view. In this semester, we will study Polya’s classic, “How to solve it”, in details. We will study a little bit about other models too. We will try and spend some time in applying Polya’s concept into mathematics instruction on various topics, including ratio and proportion. Moreover, there will be plenty of actual problem solving activities in this course. Techniques to analyze problem solving activities will be discussed. There will also be some special emphasis on solving plane geometry problems. In view of the fact that some past graduate students encountered some troubles in writing literature review for their theses, we will read more research papers this semester. The readings will be announced in class. Students will be responsible for participating in paper discussion throughout the whole semester.
